  1. I think your site is GREAT. I’ve been trying to share with my daughter the atmosphere of living around 71st and all of the stores in the 1960’s..One thing, you have a property listed at 1418 E 73rd st. That area was never considered South Shore. I was called Greater Grand Crossing. I should know, I lived 4 blocks from that property until 1986. I don’t have any pictures but I have a very good memory. I attended St.Laurence Catholic school and was even married in that church in the 70’s. I may still have a color postcard of the church. I must look. If I can find it I will share with you. I have a lot of info to share. Mail me back if I can help.

    Sincerely,
    Colette

    • Thanks for the nice words, Colette.

I’m sure you are right about the boundary for South Shore.

I’m a little casual about defining some locations, although there is the excuse that if it was near enough it might be viewed loosely as part of the neighborhood.

      All the best,

      John Chuckman

  2. HI John, I so appreciate the history you’ve collected. I grew up in Park Ridge in the 50s through mid 70s and visited Chicago often to see relatives or to shop downtown. My father and mother met on “The IC” at 71st and Jeffery station in 1952. He worked on the train, and she worked as a secretary downtown for CBS studios. Their first date was at a bar that was near that station. By any chance would you know which bar that might have been back then? I’m doing research for my memoir, and would love to have a name. I visited that site in the late 90s but there were no bars around. I would so appreciate any names, knowledge and/or photos you have that might be the bar they had their first date in. Thank you!
