I lived in Hyde Park from birth, except for a few years, until 1963. We lived at different locations. My mother worked at the 5th Army/Gardiner. I can remember walking over there and watching them play Taps and taking the flag down; the Veteran’s gardens where people would pull and give you a carrot or? Many memories the Piccadilly (Karmelkorn Store), Harper and Hyde Park theaters; Book store on Lake Park across from Kenwood School-Mr. and Mrs Maynes(sp) and Willy. They let me help at the penney candy counter. (they moved over to 53rd St years later, I think more of a Stationary Store, Steiner’s Grocery down the way with bulk food bins.. I attended Kenwood, Brete Harte and Hyde Park High School. Spent many wonderful hours at the YMCA (grew up there). So many memories. Such a great place to grow up. We didn’t know how lucky we were.
