I remember going to the Y and running around the huge indoor track back in the late 40’s. Also swimming in the pool. Fond memories. Thanks Chuck.
We lived a block away on 53rd and Harper. We used the Y all the time – the gym the pool, Little League and Babe Ruth League at Farmer’s Field. Sad to see so much of the old Hyde Park now gone.
Hi John,
Ah, you mentioned one of my favorite old names,Farmers Field.
It’s almost mystical in memory.
As a young boy, I went with some neighbors to a Halloween bonfire there one night in the early 1950s.
They burned what seemed a huge figure in the twilight.
The atmosphere of that stays in my memory.
The name alone, Farmers Field, in an urban environment, is fascinating.
I’ve never seen another reference to it.
I don’t think it exists anymore.
If you know anything about it, please post it.
Born in Hyde Park in 1943, my family lived at 54th Greenwood ,went to Koz a couple years before moving to 7742 Essex in South Shore . Lived at the Hyde Park YMCA for a while after getting out of basic training in the Army Reserves. It was inexpensive and a step up from military housing.I still remember walking from the Y to the lake after the the blizzard of 1979. What a beautiful sight, the snow and ice with the waves crashing in. I have fond memories of Hyde Park and South Shore. David Linetzky
