CHUCKMAN’S PLACES – SOUTH SHORE CHICAGO – IN MEMORIAM: PRESTON UNEY, MY OLD, GOOD FRIEND – IN HIS LAST YEAR (2008) AND A CROP FROM BRADWELL CLASS PHOTO (1955)   1 comment

NOTE TO READERS: I AM ALWAYS INTERESTED IN OLD SNAPSHOTS OR OTHER MATERIALS WHICH SHOW ASPECTS OF SOUTH SHORE LIFE, ESPECIALLY AROUND THE 1950s AND 1960s. THERE ARE SEVERAL PLACES FOR WHICH I HAVE YET TO DISCOVER ANYTHING. IF YOU HAVE ANY WORTHWHILE OLD PHOTOS, I WOULD APPRECIATE RECEIVING A SCAN FROM YOU FOR POSTING ON THE SITE. YOU WILL BE CREDITED.

I’m so sorry to learn of Preston’s death. I remember what close friends the two of you were back in our Bradwell days.

Thanks, Karen. I don’t think any other event around getting older so struck me with the sense of my own mortality.

I can still remember vividly our walking home from Bradwell, stopping at South Shore Holiday Florist and getting a free flower for each of our mothers.

Or playing “army” in the empty lot on 79th.

Or learning to dance with his older sister Marie.

He was a great individual and a decent person, not things that are as common as we might hope.

And…I also remember the war pictures the two of you would draw, complete with sound affects, in school, when you should have been doing something more mundane, like math. Wonderful memories to hold, John, close to your heart.
